The Plumb Precision Products LLCThermal Barrier Handguard (P3 TBH)

The Plumb Precision Products LLC is a patent pending revolutionary handguard system. It utilizes the latest in material and coating technologies to reduce the thermal transfer of suppressed firearms.

Originally designed for a USSOCOM SBIR project (SBIR 2024.4: S244-007-0314) the P3 TBH provides a unique multi-component design with high lateral and vertical strength. This provides minimal deflection under load in excess of USSOCOM requirements.

The P3 TBH maximizes user interface with weapon controls and accessories. The P3 TBH allows for a suppressor to be partially or completely internally retained. Non-ceramic coated versions have been tested to a suppressor surface temp of 600F without delamination.

The P3 TBH has superior heat evacuation. The P3 TBH is the first handguard system to actively incorporate Stack Effect airflow management.

This improves user comfort and proficiency and weapon operational efficiency.

The Plumb Precision Products LLC was initially designed for the Sig Sauer Rattler in 300 Blackout. This system with short barrel and suppressor creates an immense amount of heat in full auto fire. Plumb Precision Products LLC developed a prototype system for a USSOCOM SMU. This technology was instantly transferred to another weapon platform know for issues caused by heat and suppression. The FN SCAR.

The FN SCAR 17S has a relatively small gas block and piston system that it shares with the SCAR 16. Due to design elements that can trap excess heat from suppression, the SCAR is known for excess heat. This is known element of the system. USSOCOM’s Mk.17 program has a 300 round cookoff test protocol. The P3 SCAR TCH allows for the system to pass this protocol with a 25% increase in rounds fired. (400 rounds).

The P3 SCAR TBH is oriented to the SCAR 17 with 16”, 13”, and 11.5” barrels. The SCAR 16 can supported similar barrel lengths. (the 10.5” SBR requires special parts). The SCAR 20 and SCAR 15 are not supported. The design allows for use of all aftermarket gas regulators. The gas regulators are accessible and removable without removing the P3 SCAR TBH. Additionally, most suppressor locking collars can be accessed without removing the handguard.

The P3 SCAR TBH has ergonomics that removed pinch points and snag points from other designs. While it can be removed with or without the barrel, it is meant to provide semi-permanent arrangement that provided far great rigidity and lighter eight than other designs. It also uses 10-24 screws in all aspects of its design, so that lost screws can be replaced with MLOK® screws.

The Plumb Precision Products LLC has application to other piston systems. The HK 417 and 416 rifles are known for being “front heavy”. These weapon systems have a piston gas system can that retain excessive heat under suppression. Many of the DoD systems are fully automatic which can exacerbate heat issues. The HK 417 and commercial market MR 762 are the first Heckler and Koch weapon systems to be fitted with the Plumb Precision Products Thermal Barrier Handguard. Soon the HK 416 and MR 556 platforms will be fitted as well.

The P3 HK417 TBH has ergonomics that has no pinch or snag points. It can be removed to access the gas piston system. The internal frame arrangement that provided far great rigidity and lighter eight than other designs. It also uses 10-24 screws in all aspects of its design, so that lost screws can be replaced with MLOK® screws.
